Hearst Museum object titled Box, accession number 9-12599a,b, described as Box: Novelty (?), long, very flat with lid (b).  Five ridges that imitate bamboo.  Decorated with bamboo leaves and bugs in slight gold relief (hiramakie) on ground of green with a very light sprinkling of gold particles (maki).  Interior is a flat brown and black lacquer.  Crack in lid, gold surface rubbed off in spots.  Length 11.6 cm; Width 7.5 cm.

With box and lid (b and c); rough and square shape with flat bottom and tall sides that have slight slope outwards, and a thick rim.  Bail handle from middle of one side to opposite, of four coils of clay, braided, and attached.  Bottom of interior has impressed floral design.  Light coat of emerald green glaze over white, over all including bottom.  Bottom shows impressed pattern of textile.  Overall shape and roughness made to imitate a basket.  Crack on one side and mended with blue substance.  Box (b and c) is of pine, has 6 characters on the underside.  Sticker from import shop on top that identifies its function.  For serving confectionary cakes
Hearst Museum object titled Box, accession number 9-12580a,b, described as Incense box, lacquer: small, rectangular, lid has slightly rounded top.  Flat bottom. Lid and bottom are equal halves, and each has pewter rims.  Decoration on top of lid depicts a lute (biwa), 2 cymbals, and a reed organ (sho) on a ground of lightly sprinkled gold on black (maki-hanashi) which covers rest of box, inside and out.  Lute: densely sprinkled gold (fundame) imitating wood grain.  Strings and detail in slight relief gold (hiramakie), keys of inlaid mother of pearl.  End has small squares of gold, inlaid (okibara-me). Cymbals: fundame.  Organ of brown lacquer. Tassels in red (e-urushi).  Height 2.5 cm; Length 7.3 cm; Width 5.7 cm.

(Keiran-nuri).  Bottom and interior is gloss black lacquer (kuro-urushi).  Rim of top and bottom is gold much of which was rubbed off.  Crack in top and many chips in surface. Height 1.8 cm; Maximum Width 6.2 cm. *Keiran-nuri is the technique of inlaying crushed egg shell into the surface which is then covered with black lacquer and ground down until the white shows through.  Also known as Tamago-nuri (egg lacquer).

Hearst Museum object titled Box, accession number 9-12583a,b, described as Box, lacquer with lid, for holding powdered tea in tea ceremony: the box is globular with recessed foot.  Lid top is nearly flat with rounded edge, and straight sides.  Exterior of both top and bottom is elaborately decorated with a scene depicting hills and blossoming trees, on a ground of brilliant densely sprinkled gold particles (ji-maki).  The hill (4 on top) are of a dark color, possibly from an overcoat or sprinkling of a dark pigment (kuro-makie).  The trees are in slight relief (hiramakie) gold with light and dark metal inlaid blossoms (kirigane).  Side of box decorated in same fashion.  Interior of both top and bottom is of lightly sprinkled gold on a black ground.  Maximum height 5.5 cm; Diameter 8.5 cm.
