Hearst Museum object titled Basket, accession number 1-70112, described as Coiled, wide mouth, sloping sides.  Tag "Mission Type". Per Ralph Shanks:  Coiled burden basket.  Deergrass bundle foundation.  The basket has a central design band with a mottled juncus design of tan and orange wefts with bands of black dyed juncus at the top and the bottom.  The wefts above and below the design band are sumac.  The basket has an interior workface and the work direction is to the right.  The weft fag ends are bound under.  The rim is plain wrapped with the coil ending tapered with some backstitching.  The basket is from Southwestern California, the design is common with the Luiseño.

Warps and wefts are juncus.  Up to the right slant of weft twist.  At the rim warps are bound under in pairs to the exterior side.  This is a Southwest California basket.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Openwork burden basket, flattened and broken.  Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is probably hazel.  The wefts are possibly willow.  The basket is plain twined, with the distance between weft rows consistent at approximately an inch.   The warps at the rim are woven together and bound down on the interior.  The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  Due to the condition of the basket the workface and work direction is undetermined. There is commercial string with bailing wire on one of the rim fragments.  The basket is from Northwestern California.
