Image Missing: Hearst Museum object titled Netsuke, accession number 9-12539a,b, described as Manju type netsuke (?) or simply a box: carved ivory rectangular box of two pieces with lobed corners. Top has separately carved, inset medallion with an incised carving of a ghostly looking woman with long untidy hair, holding a dipper. The details are stained dark. Surrounding the medallion is a key fret pattern. Underside of top is plain except for a hole where a loop (for cords) was possibly attached. Bottom of box has hole with a radiating petal design around it on the outside. Possibly had piece to fit in, or is for cords to pass through if used as a Netsuke. Used as a netsuke: is a toggle to be attached to the end of a cord and thrust through the sash (obi) of the kimono for the support of a purse, pouch or lacquer box.
