Hearst Museum object titled Huipil, accession number 3-29964, described as huipil, heavy woven cotton, white.  Heavily embroidered around the neckline with figures  of animals in  brilliant colours.  Two strips of cloth stitched together vertically.  No hemming, no side seams.  Embroidered with two smaller animal and flower motifs at the sides where armholes would be. The center seam appears to be machine stitched.

Native name and meaning: Saco, jacket; hombre, man's. Materials, techniques: Two and five cotton singles in predominately red, with some navy blue. Context of use: Collected by Linda Green in Guatemala in 1991. Jacket predominately cotton treadle loomed striped cloth, with commercially woven wool for collar, cuffs, and lapels. Lapels and collar decorate with white machine-stitched diamond pattern. Five outside pockets. jacket decorated around pockets, sleeves and down back with knit braid; braid also used to bind edges of jacket. Jacket is lined with navy blue commercial cloth, and has two inside pockets. This jacket is much more tailored than the one collected in the 1940's (see 3-29652), but does not have the older one's embroidered decorations. Two-button front closure with machine stitched front closure. Geometric and curvilinear iconography.

Bottom of leg opens with 10 hooks and eye closure and is lined with red felt. Black braid binds bottom of legs, 2 pockets run up side of each leg. length: 1m 2 cm Were worn by men and marriageable boys for special occasions only as when courting, at weddings, on important visits, etc. Now very seldom worn by men, never by boys. Very rare
