Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel or willow. The wefts are conifer root. The weft overlay background is beargrass, with designs in red dyed Woodwardia, and maidenhair fern. At the starting knot there is ⅓ inch of three strand twining followed by plain twining to the edge of the base, where there is a single weft row of lattice twining. Plain twining continues until ½ inch below the rim, where there are two weft rows of lattice twining with one weft row of plain twining between them. Plain twining continues until the rim. The rim is trimmed. The basket is almost entirely covered in overlay. The main design is vertical zigzags with triangles on the exterior with a horizontal maidenhair fern band at the top and bottom. The base has three horizontal rows of designs in beargrass. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is on the exterior. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist, and a rightward work direction. The basket is from Northwestern California.

The basket is from Northwest California.  There are two light hairs woven into the top exterior of the hat.

The warp material is probably willow.  The background wefts are conifer root.  The weft overlay is beargrass, red dyed woodwardia, and maidenhair fern.  Starting at the starting knot is 1/2 inch of three strand twining, followed by 1.25 inches of plain twining.  After that, there is one weft row of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues to 1/2 inch below the rim where there is another weft row of three strand twining.  After that plain twining continues to the end of the rim, which is trimmed.  The design background overlay is beargrass.   The design at the start is formed by an encircling row of maidenhair fern, surrounded by a circle of woodwardia triangles.  A second design follows that with overlay over the three strand twining with triangles of woodwardia outlined by maidenhair fern below it.  The main design is comprised of a maidenhair band with repeating elements comprised of three triangles and a diamond.  The design above the rim is a repeat of the three strand twining with overlay and a band of triangles above it.  At the rim are four sets of two triangles.  The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction.  The overlay is on the exterior, with some pattern coming through to the other side.  The basket is from Northwestern California.
