Plain twining and 3-strand twining; pine root weft with overlay of Xerophyllum tenax leaf, maidenhair fern stem, and Woodwardia fern fiber. Designs in black and rust red on straw-colored ground. Hemispherical shape slightly peaked.

Hearst Museum object titled Basketry cap, accession number 1-211617, described as Basketry cap.  Tag "Klamath R. Tribes att.". Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined woman's basket hat.  Crossed warp starting knot, slightly indented.  The warp material is probably hazel or willow. The weft material is conifer root.  The weft overlay design has a beargrass background with maidenhair fern designs. Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for 1/2 inch, followed by 3/4 inch of plain twining, followed by two weft rows of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues to the rim where there are two weft rows of three strand twining 1/2 inch below the rim.  The rim is trimmed.  The main design is six elements comprised of two stacked trapezoids with a triangle at the top or bottom. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwestern California.

Main section has diagonally stacked yellow rectangles cut by brown lines. four black trapezoids.  Label "Klamath River tribes". Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined basket hat. Crossed warp starting knot. Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for .5 inch, followed by 2 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of lattice twining.  Plain twining continues to the rim where there is one weft row of lattice twining 1/2 inch below the rim.  The rim is trimmed.  The main design is four sets of diagonally stacked beargrass rectangles cut by diagonal lines. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwest California; perhaps Karuk based on the area of Riddell's family lived.

Plain twining continues to .5 inch from the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining.  The rim is trimmed.  The main design is four sets of three stacked parallelograms with four diagonal lines running through them.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is primarily single-sided, with the design on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwestern California, possibly Karuk based on the Orleans area where Francis Riddell family lived.

The overlay design is on the exterior face with only a little beargrass on the interior.  The basket has a rightward work direction and an up to the right slant of weft twist.
