Hearst Museum object titled Statue (reproduction), accession number 21-39, described as Cast of the Amazon of Sosikles, after the marble of the Capitoline Museum with his inscribed signature. The C. Museum has another marble copy of the same original, of which the drapery is better done. Capitoline Museum. New: Both arms and details. The head of the Mattei statue is the best one of this composition. The head of the Mattei statue belongs not to it but to another copy of the Sosikles model, which Mahler attributes to Polykleitos. Gherardi removed the stump of the cast, and the wrongly restored right arm of the cast, and modelled (sic) a new right arm with a spearshaft (sic) in conformity with a drawing supplied by Dr. A. Emerson. Compare, for this restoration, Furtwaengler, Masterpiece Figure. The Ephesian Amazons by Polykleitos, Pheidias, Kresilas, and Phradmon (Pliny H.V.) were bronze statues. The many extant Amazons on foot appear to be copies of them. Consult Michaelis, Jahrbuch I, Friederichs-Wolters 513, 514, 515, 516, 517, 518, 519. Furtwaengler Masterpieces under Pheidias, Polykleitos, Kresilas, Mahler, Polykleitos, Mahler’s view appears correct.
