: Hearst Museum object titled Disk, accession number 9-12567, described as Disk, metal; part of a Kagami-buta type netsuke. One side has intaglio relief of a robed bearded man w/ floppy hat, holding a gold handled fly whisk* w/ a silver-like brush. The robes are represented by simple stylized lines deeply incised. Tiny 5 character inscription to one side. Brown metal loop on the other side, w/ short loop of orange silk cord. The disk is white silver-like metal, polished on one side and dull on the other. Dia. 3.3cm. Part of the inscription might read "Minjo" name of late 19th c. metal worker.

: Hearst Museum object titled Netsuke, accession number 9-7638, described as Netsuke. Wood manju form base with kagamibuta lid of three materials. The subject matter of this piece is of a highly confusing nature. The figure with the steam issuing from his mouth could be the Chinese monk who insulted ht emporer by blowing wine out of his mouth in the direction of a house that was on fire. The lower figure does not really appear to be male, however. Some monks were thought to be able to vaporize their souls, but the context here is incorrect for that theme.
