Twined, partly openwork. Tag: "Klamath R. Tribes att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined openwork basket, made for sale. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel. The basket has conifer root wefts. The overlay weft material is beargrass and red-dyed Woodwardia. Starting at the starting knot, there is one weft row of plain twining, followed by a 0.25 inch of three strand twining, followed by 1⅓ inch of plain twining, followed by a single weft row of three strand twining. Going up the sides of the basket plain twining alternates with openwork crossed warps. At the rim the warps sticks are bent over to form a braid-like finish. The main design is a horizontal band of off-set rectangles. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist. The overlay is primarily single sided, with the design on the exterior, with the central band having the design on the interior as well. The workface is on the exterior. The basket is from Northwestern California.
