Comment:

Maker saw original paddle (1-922) in the Lowie Museum while he was the director of the Hoopa Museum (1980-84). Two copies of the paddle were then carved by him - one being this accession. The pair of paddles were exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum in Fall 1991, and at the Oakland Museum in Spring 1992. In "A Dialogue with Tradition," an exhibit associated with the "Objects of Myth and Memory" exhibit of Brooklyn objects collected by Stewart Culin.
