Used by men & women as ritual instrument to accompany chants; held in right hand, thumb is inserted into hole of one,four fingers in hole of other,then hit together rhythmically. "A pair of wooden clappers with jingles made of thin brass discs inserted into the body is played with one hand, held between thumb and four fingers. The surface with thin metal bands are struck together. the "kartal" is used in devotional singing and dance for rhythmic accompaniment, often in conjunction with the "ektara."
