Woman’s basketry dress hat or cap, twined. Opposing and separated large triangles in center, each with single horizontal dark band within and each outlined in black on two sides. Tag "Kl. R. Tr. att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined woman's basket hat. The rim is unraveling. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is possibly hazel. The weft material is conifer root. The weft overlay background is beargrass with designs in red-dyed woodwardia and maidenhair fern. Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for .5 inch, followed by 1.25 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to .5 inch from the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining. The rim is trimmed. The main design is six alternating up and down triangles outlined by four alternating lines of beargrass and maidenhair fern. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is primarily single-sided, with the design on the exterior. The basket is from Northwestern California.
