4 x 5" Black and white negative of Dudley Hoefler and Captain Sardar Mohammed Shah Hazratji on the back of an elephant. Hoefler's original description: "Gwalior State, Central India. In Gwalior State elephants are used in tiger hunting. Special beasts are employed in this sport, elephants that have been broken in to tiger hunting; for some of these huge animals go panicky at the very smell of a tiger, and would be more dangerous to their riders than a dozen of the striped cats. Photograph shows Dudley Hoefler, holding the riifle, and behind him, Captain Sardar Mohammed Shah Hazratji, an A.D.C. to His Highness The Maharaja.
