Traditional craft figure, originally representing a ritual propitiation of the gods for fine weather, prosperity, fertility, and the supply of seed for next year's harvest. Story told by Staffordshire people about their famous knot from early times: At one time there were so many rogues and vagabonds in the County that someone devised a means of hanging them three at a time, by using the three holes made by the tying of this knot. The knot was so ingenious it was considered a good idea to include it in their County Coat of Arms.
