Twined. Per Ralph Shanks: Twined globular basket bowl, probably made for sale. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel. The weft material is conifer root. The weft overlay design is beargrass, red dyed woodwardia, and maidenhair fern. Starting at the starting knot, there is 1/2 inch of three strand twining, followed by 1 3/4 inch plain twining, followed by 2 weft rows of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to the rim where there is 1/8th inch of crossed warp open work. The rim appears to be comprised of 1 weft row of plain twining with reinforcing rods wrapped with beargrass, red dyed woodwardia, and maidenhair fern. The main design is six diagonal sets of paired stacked triangles. The basket has a rightward work direction, with up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is single-sided, on the exterior. The basket is from Northwest California.
