The bag is woven on a form called a waku. There are various types and sizes and ,like most weavers, Abe, Seiko made her own. It consists of an open frame of apporximately the size of the bag to be woven and a kaya or rod that is placed at the top end of the board. In Abe-san's case, she uses the frame to set the length of the warps and to begin laying in the wefts that form the base. After a few wefts have sufficiently bound the warps together, she removes the completed section from the frame and rod and continues to lay the wefts in by hand. Warping begins at the top of the frame by wrapping the end of the warp cord securely around the rod. This is a reproduction of a bag in Shioya, Makiko's cards (#119028) that came from Kuriyama in Tochigi Prefecture. Both the original and reproduction are of iwashiba.
