Multi-purpose carryall, may also be used to carry tortillas to the fields for lunch and on journeys. Alejandro de Avila Blomberg (1984) calls them "costales" [card: crossed off "but" and hand written "in Chiapas"], acc. to Cordry, "costal" = wrap around skirt. Cordry (p. 142): "Bags on the whole come from the northern and central areas - Tepehuas, Huichols, Coras, Otomis, Huastecs, Mazahuas, and Nahuas (but they are also made in the Chiapas highlands).
