Knot and start of the first coil of a basket. The material used as foundation in all coiled basketry from this region is the grass stems, which is not a sufficiently pliable material to admit of such small coils as are required in the start of a basket. Therefore the sedge (Carex) or other pliable material is used for this purpose.
