Round with concave base. Circular triangle design in red-brown on straw colored ground with narrow horizontal black bands. Badly broken all around rim. Hazel or willow stick warp, conifer root weft, plain twined with dyed Woodwardia fern, white grass and maidenhair fern half twist overlay. Tag "NW Calif. att". Second tag "Scott loan #4". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket, possibly unused. Crossed warp starting knot, indented. The warp material is probably hazel. The wefts are conifer root. The weft overlay is red dyed Woodwardia, beargrass and maidenhair fern. At the starting knot there is 1⅓ inch of three strand twining followed by plain twining to the edge of the base, where there is a single weft row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues until the rim, where the last weft row is three strand twining. The rim is trimmed, and is in poor condition. The basket is almost entirely covered in overlay. The main design includes horizontal zigzags with a horizontal band of triangles below. The base has a horizontal band of beargrass and a horizontal band of red dyed Woodwardia fern. The basket undulates. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is on the exterior. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist, and a rightward work direction. The basket is from Northwestern California or neighboring tribes.
