Twined trinket basket. Round, with pedestal base. Complex triangular design. Tag : "Northwest Calif att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined globular basket bowl with pedestal, made for sale. Crossed warp starting knot. The warps are hazel. Conifer root weft, with overlay of beargrass background and red dyed woodwardia designs. Starting at the bowl's starting knot there is 3/4 inches of three strand twining, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining, followed by plain twining up to the rim, where there is 1/4 inch of open work, with crossed warps, followed by two weft rows of plain twining. The rim is damaged, with some parts still wrapped, with an unknown material, around a reinforcing rod. The pedestal of the basket, starting at the part furthest from the basket bowl, has a wrapped rim, with a reinforcing rod, followed by 1/4 inch of open work crossed warps, followed by plain twining to where the pedestal meets the bowl, where there are two weft rows of three strand twining. The primary design includes continuous horizontal steps with triangles at the apex. There are horizontal rows of triangles at the base and rim of the bowl and at the rim of the pedestal. The basket has an exterior workface with a rightward work direction and an up to the right slant of weft twist. The overlay is single sided, on the exterior, except on the base which is on the interior. The basket is from Northwest California.
