Red pattern is Redbud (Cercis occidentalis). Black pattern is Brake fern (Pteris quilina). Very old, very worn cooking basket with grass foundation and bands of zigzag designs in black and red. The design on this basket called "measuring worm" or "inch worm" (fide Mrs. Silva, July 1973). Mended.

Decoration:  Black designs very similar to the "standing up" design recorded by Barrett. Dark material is brackenfern root. 3-rod coiling, with interlocking stitches.

Barret bought this basket from a man who thought it was made by a Chukchansi woman.  To Dawson it looks like a newly made Northfork Mono basket with opposite work direction to Chukchansi habits.

Coiled on a bundle foundation, with non-interlocking stitches.  Bottom has been repaired, rim is damaged in several places and has been repaired along one break.
